Brampton's Snow and Ice Removal By-law 242-76 requires owners and tenants to remove snow, ice and slush from sidewalks adjoining their property by 11:00 a.m. the day after the end of a snowfall. Enforcement is complaint-driven: an Order to Comply gives eight hours, after which a City contractor clears the sidewalk and the cost plus administration fees are added to the tax bill. The City clears only sidewalks on arterial roads, in front of City parks and recreation facilities, curb-faced and reverse-frontage sidewalks, and roads with permanent Brampton Transit or Züm stops; all others are the owner's. Crews do not return to remove the windrow; the homeowner is responsible. Local streets are plowed once per event at 5 cm or more within 24 hours. Snow from a private lot plowed onto a City street can bring a fine to the property management company. The Snow Removal Financial Assistance Program offers eligible residents a grant of up to $300, or $400 for a corner lot, toward hiring a private provider.
